ARTURO TOSCANINI
(Parma, 25th March 1867 – New York, 16th January 1957)
The genius and the passion; a strong personality allied to an absolute rigour of musical interpretation, a new vision of what Opera Houses should be like and their consequent reform. The great Maestro’s refusal of every type of compromise and his civic commitment. All of these things, and more, make up the legacy of this outstanding orchestra conductor who was born in a poor area of town , known as the ‘oltretorrente’ or ‘beyond the river’. This year we commemorate the death of this man, who was acclaimed in the most important theatres of the world, and we find that his lesson is still extraordinarily precious and relevant to the modern age.
With you we will trace the steps of his life from his infancy to the debut in Rio de Janeiro, his career at La Scala and then at the Metropolitan in New York, the war and his chosen exile up until his glorious final years.
We will accompany you to the places which still today celebrate his genius:
Parma:
- The Museum which is in the house where Toscanini was born, 'La Casa Natale'
- The Arrigo Boito Music School (Conservatoire) and museum where Toscanini’s private study has been reconstructed
- The Parma Opera House, the 'Teatro Regio'
- The Music Museum 'Casa della Musica'
- The Verdi Theatre where Toscanini conducted on two memorable occasions in 1913 and 1926
- The Museum housed in 'Casa Barezzi'
